New ‘pump’ bike track coming to county park later this year

Prince William County will soon have its first “pump track” – a hilly, circular track popular among motorcross bike riders – at Rollins Ford Park in Nokesville.

The Prince William Board of County Supervisors on Tuesday voted unanimously to accept more than $312,000 in county and private funding for the track’s construction. The facility was long planned to be part of Rollins Ford Park, which opened in 2023, but was delayed due to a lack of funding.

“This pump track represents exactly the kind of innovative recreational opportunity our community needs,” said Supervisor Tom Gordy, who represents the Brentsville District, where the park is located. Construction of the 6,500-square-foot asphalt track began this week and should take about three months to complete, according to Seth Hendler-Voss, director of the county’s Parks & Recreation Department. The track is a paved loop for bikes, skateboarders, scooters and other wheeled sports, featuring small hills that can be traversed without pedaling by gaining momentum through “pumping” upper-body movements.

The $9.4 million park, located near Vint Hill and Rollins Ford roads, already includes a farm-themed “destination playground” for kids, two rectangular multi-purpose fields, a basketball court, two covered pavilions, a trail system, three fenced dog parks and bathrooms, which are open year-round. The park is located at 14500 Rollins Ford Road and is open daily from dawn to dusk.

Included in the 2018 application for the park, the pump track wasn’t originally constructed due to budget constraints. The last piece to the 69-acre park will sit next to its basketball court. Prince William County and the Prince William County Parks Foundation launched a fundraising campaign for the pump track in April 2022.

The Parks Foundation raised $179,000 in private donations, while the county is contributing $68,358. The Parks Foundation also secured $65,000 in construction material donations and discounts. “We are thrilled to bring this exciting recreational facility – the first of its kind in the county – to our community,” said Ruth Anderson, chair of the Prince William County Parks Foundation and a former county supervisor. “The pump track has been a community priority since its inclusion in the 2018 Rollins Ford Park master plan, and our foundation’s successful fundraising campaign demonstrates the strong community support for expanding recreational opportunities in Prince William County.” Upon completion, the county will operate and maintain the pump track.
